Building or remodeling is a very stressful experience, especially for those who are going through it for the first time. The White Sands team has worked very hard to create their Design-Build process. It minimizes the communication gaps between the architect, designer, and builder, which is often a major catalyst for mistakes. Their entire team works hard to hone in on the clients goals and identify the style so decision-making is efficient. They work hand in hand with our construction team. When there is a problem, and there always is, our construction team does a great job of presenting options in order to keep the design intact.

What tools do you use, and how do you navigate when partners have a difference of opinion in the design process?
"As a Design-Build team, we have learned that we always achieve the best result when we allow each other to work within our area of expertise. Not one person is the star of the show, and we really lean into each other and the unique talents and knowledge each person brings to the table. We have created a space where everyone is free to express their opinion, and because of this, we have great trust in the others’ perspectives."

What tips do you have for navigating different city offices, by-laws, codes and permits?
"Hire a great team!!! Your architect will definitely be the quarterback throughout navigating the city planning process, but your designer and contractor will have great ideas on how to achieve a design goal that might need to be checked by city planning. Joseph Fournier Design is the architect that we love to recommend for all our projects. It's always better to put everything you want on paper from the beginning. You really don’t want to have to go back to the city planner once you have begun construction. This is a timely and costly mistake."

What is your favorite takeaway from getting your degree in Design?
"I went into design school so I could learn the technical aspects of architectural drawing, software programs, and the business of design. All of that is, of course, extremely valuable, but I was actually surprised to discover how important the history of design would be in my career. I really enjoyed my survey classes and learning about how the evolution of architecture and design throughout time influences design today. I’ve discovered that instead of chasing trends, you can approach a project with knowledge as your foundation."

How do you manage being a full time designer, and the most important role in the world of… Mom??
"Being a Mom makes me uniquely qualified for what I do as an Interior Designer because I am creating the mechanisms and process for an efficient, beautiful lifestyle for my clients. I am still evolving my knowledge base to the benefit of my clients. That being said, the juggle is real! Finding balance between Mom duties and Client duties is a never ending quest, but because I am so passionate about both of those roles, I find so much fun in the challenge. The trick is to not take yourself too seriously!"

What is your favorite thing about your El Segundo office, and what kind of projects do you see yourself doing here in the future?
"We have had the privilege of having our home office based in El Segundo for over five years, so we know first-hand why this city is such a desirable place to live. The small-town feel in the midst of one of the largest cities in the country makes it incredibly unique to any other South Bay neighborhood. We’ve witnessed the growth in recent years as homes are beginning to transform, and companies are making El Segundo their home. As one of the last real beach towns in L.A., we welcome the opportunity to help clients create their quintessential beach home, maximize their lots and square footage, and create indoor/outdoor spaces to enjoy SoCal suburban living at its finest."
